Service dogs are a medical necessity for their handlers. People don’t choose to seek out a service dog because they enjoy bringing a dog with them wherever they go. In fact, most people feel uncomfortable while navigating the world with a dog by their side, mainly due to the unprompted attention received by complete strangers.
Those with service dogs, require the dog to perform medical duties like grounding techniques, deep pressure therapy, escorting the handler out of a store, alerting to blood sugar changes, and alerting to seizures... The list goes on and on.
When encountering a handler and their service dog, it's essential to remember that the dog is working and not a pet. You must not pet the service dog and avoid distracting them with actions like staring, pointing and speaking to the handler or the dog. Such behavior's can be triggering to the handler, who deserves our utmost respect and privacy.
Make sure you never speak to, get in the way of, or stop a service dog from doing their job. While they are trained to ignore you, they aren’t perfect. Getting in the way or addressing a service dog can distract them and cause medical distress to the handler. Be considerate, keep comments to yourself, and continue on.
Remember, establishments are required by law to allow service dogs into their facilities. Handlers hold the same rights as someone with a wheelchair, cane, walker, hearing aid, etc.
